Matt Hill

Color Management for Night Photographers

A Talk by Matt Hill (Partner, Instructor, National Parks at Night)

About this Talk

Calibrite Ambassador Matt Hill’s goal for the last 6 years has been to be both accurate and artful with color in night photography. This has included finding a reliable and repeatable approach that involves choosing lighting, camera profiling, display profiling and a post-processing strategy that gives him room to focus on creativity. Matt has journeyed around the world, searching for night photography subjects and methods to enjoy the process confidently and with a smile.

Some may think that color management and color control are voodoo. A nuisance. Impossible to do at night! Not so. Matt has tried and tested ways to make it all work, and with the least amount of stress.

It starts with capture in the field. Then continues to the hardware that you use to look at your images. And then within your editing software. At these critical points, a few minor habits can change your entire workflow into one of color joy.

Topics Matt will cover include:

 · what color problems look like

 · taking control of your inputs during both capture and editing

 · Color Management ≠ Color Correction

 · hardware calibration

Matt will also demonstrate how to make a camera profile (and a a dual illuminant camera profile!) from Colorchecker Passport photos in Lightroom Classic, and how to apply that camera profile to new photos and to photos you made in the past. He will show how to examine for color shifts and how to move forward to making better creative decisions during edits.
